The idea behind this piece is this: I chose (from a list) the theme of "anxiety/inertness" to explore. My piece has an inert (dead) mouse, two nervous mice, and one distressed cat (those three represent the "anxiety" part). The piece is an attempt to explore the innocent side of the predator/prey relationship. The cat here hasn't hunted the mouse, didn't mean to kill it, and doesn't understand what has happened. His "little buddy" suddenly isn't "playing" anymore and he is distressed and confused. His expression is supposed to convey a sense of "did I do something wrong?" Another requirement of the assignment is that it have a hole in it and that it makes use of negative space. So in this piece the cat is next to a hollowed out log, which has a hole in it. Through the hole, one of the other mice is peering around the corner and sees the dead mouse. If you look at the back of the piece, the hollow log continues back into the space that is inside the cat. This isn't meaningful or representative of anything beyond what it is: a way to show the inside of the log using the space I had available. There isn't any subtext of being "inside the cat" or being eaten or anything like that.
